Sep 11, 2000 Town Committee Actions

On Monday Sept. 11th the Windham Democratic Town Committee took the following actions:

1. Accepted the resignation of Hilda Cook from the Willimantic Service District for the Board of Selectman
2. Placed the name of Lourdes Montalvo before the entire Board of Selectman for consideration for the post vacated by Hilda Cook.
3. Accepted the resignation from the Town Committee of Melanie Keen due to moving out of town.
4. VOTED TO SAY NO TO THE BALLOT QUESTION IN NOVEMBER.

   Item #4 was discussed over a period of months. The Committee feels that to remove this office is a clear violation of our right to vote on a Constitutional Office. The question is more than the removal of the High Sheriff, it is a removal of our right to vote on an office that is in the CT Constitution. If we say yes to this, what office is next? There has been many departments and Constitutional Offices that have come under scrutiny over the years…yet there has been no cry to remove. If we let it start here, then we are saying yes to maybe some other office being eliminated in the future…leaving us WHAT to vote on. We say let us decide who stays in office and leave our Constitution alone!
