Living Wage Resolution

Whereas, the Windham Democratic Party, the Party of the People, including working families, firmly believes that a day's work deserves a fair day's pay and that no one who is working full-time to support a family should have to live in poverty; and

Whereas, the Windham Democratic Party fully supports our local business community; and

Whereas, the Windham Democratic Party recognizes the need to reduce our property taxes, and to encourage real property tax reform at the state level; and

Whereas, government and taxpayer dollars should encourage the creation of family-supporting jobs; and

Whereas, more workers are finding their wages falling below the poverty level, especially due to Connecticut's high cost of living; and

Whereas, our State and Federal governments, whose chief executives are members of the Republicans Party, have failed to keep the minimum wage at a level necessary to maintain self-sufficiency; and

Whereas, a Living Wage will facilitate the rising of working families from the depths of poverty, while at the same time increasing social and economic benefits for the community as a whole and providing a supportive environment for employers who try to maintain fair wages; and

Whereas, a Living Wage will decrease the need for public assistance programs by increasing family-supporting jobs; and

Whereas, a Living Wage will increase tax revenues by increasing consumer spending and can help stabilize our local economy; and

Whereas, a Living Wage will result in lower job turnover rates that will reduce the costs of recruitment, hiring and training and increase the quality and continuity of job performance; and

Whereas, a Living Wage will increase incentives among low-wage workers to work hard and gain the experience and skills demanded in the job market;

Now Therefore, be it resolved that the Windham Democratic Town Committee requests that the Windham Board of Selectmen fully consider a Livable Wage Ordinance that secures a living wage to workers whose earnings are derived from local government employment and contracts, while also ensuring that any such ordinance shall not have an unfair impact on the business community or property tax rates of the Town of Windham,

And be it further resolved that the Windham Democratic Town Committee formally urge our representatives in State and Federal government to support a significant increase in the minimum wage.
