Minutes of Mar 26, 2002 Meeting

Members Present: 29= Quarom

1. Call to order by Chair Niles at 7:05 p.m.

2. Motion by W. Pawelkewicz, seconded by A. Beaulieau to accept minutes of the previous meeting: Vote: all yes, except for one abstention from D. White.

3. Election of Delegates for Various Conventions:

  • State Convention Slate: D. Niles, V. Rayhall, Y. Negron, M. Paulhus, A. Carey, W. Pawelkiewicz, J. Lescoe, D. O'Brien, W. Sayers and T. White.
  • J. Perez stated he did not feel comfortable with voting for delegates who had not committed. Chair explained that delegates do not always commit. J. Perez nominated himself to attend the state convention, motion seconded by L. Montalvo.
    • Motion to accept the slate presented by Chair: V. Rayhall, seconded by A. Carey.
    • Paper ballot took place. Results: Slate &endash; 19 votes , 17 votes were scattered. Slate will serve as delegates for the State Convention.

4. Correspondence:

  • Winning Ways Workshop &endash; Chair plans to attend.
  • Invitation to Jefferson Jackson Bailey Dinner for April 22.

5. Nominations for Congressional Convention presented by Chair: D. Niles, D. White, T. DeVivo, T. Lambert, L. O'Brien, S. Johnson, G. Muir, MA. McCabe, W. Pawelkiewicz, and M. Paulhus. Motion by W. Pawelkewicz, seconded by A. Carey that nominations be closed, Secretary cast one affirmative ballot: Vote &endash; unanimous

6. Nominations for State Senate Convention presented by Chair: V. Rayhall, J. Lescoe, C. Marot, J. Underwood, Y. Negron, L. Montalvo, R. Coutu, B. Anderson, R. Goss and D. Rayhall. Motion by D. O'Brien, seconded by L.O'Brien that nominations be closed, Secretary cast one affirmative ballot. Vote &endash; unanimous

7. Nominations for Judge of Probate Convention presented by Chair: W. Sayers, S. Johnson, D. O'Brien, H. Clements, J. Marsalisi, S. Marsalisi, J. McGrath, T. White, W. Pawelkiewicz, L. Montalvo. Motion by. L'Obrien and J. Perez that nominations be closed, Secretary cast one affirmative ballot &endash; Vote &endash; unanimous

8. Treasurer's Report &endash; No change. Motion to accept the report by W. Pawelkewicz, seconded by T. White. Vote &endash; unanimous

9. Registrar's Report:

  • Working on getting voicemail for the Registrar's Office.
  • Do info on upcoming budget referendum (bilingually)
  • Conduct massive canvas
  • Next meeting of the Registrar Advisory Committee &endash; May 9 @ 6:00 p.m.

10. Board of Education Forum Report &endash; D. Rayhall reported. About a dozen attended, educational budget was discussed.

11. Chair's Report:

  • Nancy Wyman sent out flyer announcing her candidacy for Comptroller.
  • Chair read letter from Ned Coll, who is running for govenor.
  • oe Courtney will be celebrating his 49th birthday with a fundraiser.
  • T. White &endash; HAPPY 41ST BIRTHDAY, TOM! J
  • Democratic State Central will have their annual picnic on June 15th @ Ocean Beach park in New London.
  • State Convention will be July 12th & 13th at the Hartford Civic Center.
  • Chair met with the chairs of the 2nd District to talk about the upcoming election cycle. They will be asking the gubernatorial candidates that whoever wins at the convention, the loser please not primary. They feel that a primary could really hurt the democrats to win in November. Much discussion was held in regards to this. Many felt that the chairs did not have the right to do this and felt that this would be hindering in the democratic process of elections in this country.
  • Congressional &endash; we have the Johnson/Maloney and the 2nd District being targeted. We need to work very hard in the second.
  • Chair read a card/letter from P. Haney (Board of Education) requesting the censorship of a town committee member. Discussion of a committee member ensued. Chair to meet with State Central Committee to discuss this issue to see what the procedure would be. Chair read the WDTC's by-laws that addresses this issue. This issue is not fully addressed in the current by-laws. We should take this opportunity to address this the by-laws for future references. It was also brought as to whether or not this would be the appropriate time to debate this time considering that we have the issue of the budgets and the bonding package coming up? We also have the state budget &endash; should we be dealing with this now??

12. NO MEETING IN APRIL!!!

13. Most members will not be able to be present for a May 6th meeting. The second Monday in May is the day before the budget referendum and members felt that we should be expending our energies in getting the budgets passed, therefore, the next meeting will be in JUNE.

14. Chair announced the members of the Democratic Platform Committee: D. O'Brien, J. Lescoe, J. Rosario, C. Marot, B. Anderson, L. Ide and L. Montalvo. Committee to present a draft at the June meeting.

15. Motion to adjourn made by D. White, seconded by A. Carey at 8:15 p.m.
